Kitchen Appliances
Appliances (Major and Minor) – The major appliances should
be considered first before thinking of the small ones. The first reason why
you need to decide on the major appliances and consider them as you are
planning the kitchen, is to put them in perspective as you consider all those
factors that were discussed in the planning process. This helps in determining
the cabinet types and sizes, as well as the kitchen layout. The second reason
is to assist with the planning of the plumbing and electrical works that will
be required in the kitchen. This is so because, most of the major appliances
are actually integrated, bulky or form part of the fixed elements/materials in
the kitchen – you will avoid the after thought (problems) of having some cables
run on the wall surface, and some dangling from appliances or under the
cabinets, and above all, avoid breaking your walls after you thought you are
finish with your kitchen. The major appliances may include but not limited to
the followings: range cooker, gas hubs, electric hubs, gas and electric hub
combination, induction hubs, integrated gas ovens, integrated electric ovens,
integrated microwave ovens, self recycling hoods, ducted hoods, integrated
fridges, stand-alone refrigerators, standing freezer, chest freezer, integrated
sterilizers, warming drawers, dishwashers etc.
The minor appliances are mainly small, table-top,
light-weight, movable appliances that could be moved around in the kitchen,
plugged to sockets provided along walls, and most times tucked away inside
cabinets after use. The minor appliances may include but also not limited to
the followings: bones crushers, coffeemakers, deep fat fryers, grill, toasters,
waffle makers, vacuum cleaners, food processors, blenders, pressure cookers, sandwich
maker etc.
Next, I shall be writing on those things (features) to look out for when picking your kitchen appliances...
